Approximately fifty vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German town of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, exterior walls and postboxes were vandalized, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.
Police report they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued substance.
The substance had been applied in the form of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then located many other marked vehicles and house walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police say initial examinations show the fluid was most likely human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any injuries in connection with the incident," they commented.
Local authorities announced they were trying "to unravel the mystery" and have appealed to the public for details.
A senior official stated the incident rendered him without words and had to be solved rapidly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the far-right terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on online, referring to the killing of nine victims by a gunman focusing on people of migrant background in February 2020.
