The Black Phone
Scott Derrickson's locked-room horror holds up well without requiring a continuation. Set in 1970s Colorado, a series of disappearances has rendered the children frightened. Once Finney gets captured by “the Grabber” and held captive in a basement, he anticipates a fatal end. But the old telephone mounted nearby keeps ringing, with eerie communicators providing assistance, and the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen could save him. An effective horror. October 11th, 10.50pm, Film4
The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between faith and wealth, it's a knockout win for materialism in Showalter's delightfully tacky film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster plus her lawbreaking partner. Andrew Garfield portrays the corrupt Bakker, who proclaims early on, “God does not want us to be poor,”. The couple commence profiting from the American public's Christian beliefs. It's an extravaganza of poor styling, bad makeup and insincerity, though the lead actress achieves to depict the real-life figure as a sympathetic figure. October 14th, late night, on Film4
