The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
