British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a several access tunnels down to the facility... early reports indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - referred to as ISIS - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," he said. "They were among a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, shows how British military are prepared to act, throughout the year, protecting the UK domestically and influential overseas."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, after an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
